What's New At Sovereignty Music
January 3, 2015
Happy New Year!!!
I hope everyone had a joyous and wonderful holiday season and that the new year brings music, joy and fun to us all. Jess and I are very excited about the promise of 2015. Another Upper Valley Music Festival this summer, lots of new projects at the studio and continuing our great relationship with Replay Music Gear in Greenfield, MA. Since starting the Music Education Hub we have offered workshops on recording techniques, guitar maintenance and music business as well as offering lessons on a variety of instruments offered by wonderful teachers. Our plans for the HUB are ambitious and we can't wait to watch them hatch!
There are several projects in the pipeline at Southpaw Studios that I am really looking forward to. I can't wait to work with some amazing musicians in the studio this coming year.
The classes for Digital Recording and the Home Studio will be from March 11 to April 15 at Greenfield Community College. I love those classes; we have a lot of fun!
Personally, I have a very busy year planned. My new album, "What Got Left Behind" will be released in a couple of months and major production on The Whydah will get underway in the Spring.
All in all, 2014 was a terrific year. Many great memories from UVMF, a ton of extraordinary folks in the studio, a fair bit of hilarity and just a wee dram of mischief thrown in for good measure.
Our New Year's wish for everyone: Stay safe, play nice, have fun and drown in a sea of music! We'll help you take off the floatation device!

A VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!
Due to circumstances beyond our control the Upper Valley Music Festival 2014 which will take place on Saturday July 26, will be moving from Turners Falls, MA to take over downtown Greenfield, MA!
While we are sad we have to leave the town UVMF has called home for the past two years we are very excited to return to where it all began.
We will have multiple stages throughout the downtown area and lots of new surprises for this year's UVMF. Stay tuned for more details or go towww.uppervalleymusicfest.com for more information.

The Upper Valley Music Festival preparations are in full swing and I think this might be the best lineup of artists yet.

It's been a busy time at the studio these last few weeks. June and the Bee are in recording their debut album and it sounds amazing! Lush three-part harmonies, great songwriting. I'm having a blast working with these very fun, very talented folks.

After months of research and demoing music ideas I have finally begun work in earnest on The Whydah. I am excited to watch this project evolve. There will be many other musicians involved with this. I will keep the progress updated as everything moves along!

I've been spending most of my time these days in the studio working on my own new music project and recording tracks for the upcoming albums for several artists. It's an exciting time at Southpaw Studios. New hardware and a ton of new and updated software are making it possible to get any sound I hear in my head. The digital recording revolution has set me free in so many ways!

As I finish putting this year's Upper Valley Music Festival to bed I can't help but smile. Man, what an amazing day and night! 35 acts on the main stages and 12 more at the Emerging Artists Stage. Over 130 musicians in town! One of the main tenants of UVMF is to be a musician's festival. So many players networking, hanging out, trading tunes and catching up.
We raised thousands of dollars for the American Cancer Society, brought lots of business to Turners Falls, MA and had an absolute blast! This year's music was truly outstanding. I was mesmerized by the brilliant playing of Bill Shute, blown away by The Snaz' set at the Rendezvous, and elevated to near rapture by the set performed by one of the world's great cellists, Eugene Friesen. I'm never so proud to call myself a musician as I am on festival day!
So, thank you thank you thank you to all the musicians, volunteers, sound people, stage managers and stage hands, venue owners and everyone else who had a hand in making UVMF 2013 such a success!
I would also like to give a special shout out and big thank you to my best friend and fellow festival conspirator, Jessica Byrnes. Without her tireless work on fundraising, advertising, volunteer organization and about a million other details she so gracefully tackled UVMF would be, well, non-existent.
I can't wait to ramp it up again for UVMF 2014!

Preparations are in full swing for the 3rd annual Upper Valley Music Festival which will be held on July 27 in Turners Falls, MA. We have over 35 acts on the bill representing an array of musical styles. As always, every penny of profit we make goes to fund cancer research.
UVMF is a ton of work but my wife Jess and I have a hill of fun putting the whole thing together. Our philosophy is nothing negative, have fun and do some good.
Late summer and early fall look to be a busy time at Southpaw Recording Studios. Several artists have album projects slated to start as well as beginning work on my own project. The new tracking room is really sweet, especially for acoustic instruments and vocals. Planning on spending the week after UVMF running sound tests an

Recording all the vocal tracks for The List of Whales, the latest album by the brilliant Carrie Ferguson. Tremendous talent, even better person. It shouldn't be this much fun!
